WORLD/US ISSUES - INTRODUCTION Online Links for Information Insight - 20040829 Like the name says, with THE INFORMATION HIGHWAY TO THE GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT you get links to organizations active in environmental monitoring within their country. Names addresses and telephone numbers are given. Another organization that lives up to its name is The WWW Virtual Library: International Affairs Resources. This set of links gives you much more immediately accessible information than the first reference with "Major Limited Area Search Engines, Directories, Portals, and Bibliographic Articles". Links to "think tanks",those non-governmental organizations that influence government policies, are organized by country at the NIRA's World Directory of Think Tanks. Somtimes, it is hard to believe that so much thinking goes on. Duke University has a wonderful Non-governmental Organizations Research Guide. Their "database and guide are limited in scope to those NGOs which: ..• Focus on one of three issues--environmentally sustainable development, human rights, or women in development. Some of these NGOs may also address broader or related issues such as poverty, hunger, and humanitarian aid. Those NGOs which we found that address more than one of the selected issues are also listed under the general term "Development." ..• Produce publications of research value to university users and policymakers ..• Are large, influential organizations as demonstrated by affiliations with other organizations, directory listings, and currently maintained web sites." An economics oriented site is The World Bank Group. They say "The World Bank Group’s mission is to fight poverty and improve the living standards of people in the developing world." These sites seem like handy references when you want more background to a media report on World/US issues. Work with them and you'll find the sites that give you more information insight than information glut.
